HOMEGROWN TOMATOES

If I's to change this life I lead
I'd be Johnny Tomato Seed
`Cause I know what this country needs
Homegrown tomatoes in every yard you see

-- Lyrics courtesy of HOMEGROWN TOMATOES

Nothing says summer like homegrown tomatoes - eat 'em raw with a bit of salt. Bliss!

Tomatoes have a right to have an entire post of their own don't you think?  We grew some beauties this year and so I figure on showing them off. To help get you in the "tomato fashion show" mood: sit back, sip your cuppa, play the little ditty and feast your eyes... coming down the runway now are some plump, well rounded homegrown beauties.

What's your favorite tomato or heirloom?

My favourite tomatoes are green zebra tomatoes and Tommy Toe! I love all heirloom veggies and go out of my way to keep the old traditions alive, if I want boring tomatoes I can just go to the supermarket!!!!!

You would be amazed how many people when buying tomato plants ask "I just want a medium red tomato like whats in the grocery store which one is it" I then tell them that most of what I have is heirloom tomato plants and attempt to tell them the nice things about each. If they insest I will always have a few big boys and better boys or early girls. I only grow about 500 tomaoto plants in my little greenhouse and I never have any trouble getting rid of them all after giving them to friends and taking what I need. Last year we were going to be going out of town and I had nearly 100 left. I advertised on craigs list and a lady came right over and bought all 100 at a discount. Most of the time I just give the few I have left away to local neighborhood gardens.

The Cherokee Purple is the best tasting tomato ever, the Zebra is the best looking one. The small yellow cocktail tomato is also a star, excellent taste and huge amount of fruits.
