June Harvest Tally - A collective growing effort to harvest 1 million pounds

Post what you harvested from your garden/farm in May of 2009
Tally Guidelines
Any "poundage" grown by you on your property, patio, window sill or community plot including fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts that goes toward feeding yourself, animals and community.
Honey, dairy, eggs and meat can be tallied also but will not be counted in the 1 million "pound" tally but listed seperately as food produce.
Let's get growing! |

Ancel, I know what ginger is, but I'm not sure of the other two things. Even if there isn't an English word for them could you tell us about them? Really, I'm just curious ;-) |

Hi Mary, happy to! Araza and Guayabilla are guava relatives. Both are small sized trees, up to about 15 foot high, and produce heavily about 3 times a year (here anyway). The araza is yellow, is about 3 - 5 inches in diameter, has a skin like a peach, smells delicious and tastes very acidic. The guayabilla is smooth, shiny skinned, about 1 -3 inches in diameter and also very acidic. It produces less, again about twice a year. There is no name in English, but the scientific names are Eugenia stipitata for Araza, and Eugenia victoriana for the guayabilla. The fruits are too acidic to eat from the tree but are great in a juice or in jams, pies, puddings, scones. I use mine to make a great jam we sell at the farmers' market. It tastes a bit like rhubarb, if you haven't had rhubarb jam for ten years. Hope this is useful! We finally started harvesting. We've got a total of 2 pounds of lettuce, bunching onion, swiss chard and strawberries. We've gotten behind on removing strawberry blossoms or we would not have harvested these yet! Never got the radish planted :( I would have really upped the poundage with them! |

MrBadger, you crack me up! I've created new columns in my spreadsheet just for you!I aim to please! Spring weather here in the Willamet Valley is cool and so things are slow taking off. But we should be harvesting some non-rodent crops soon, mostly lettice at first but a bunch of tomatoes, zuchiinnie and squash. Got a lot more planted but nothing that will be harvested anytime soon. So I have to report what I can!!! :-) (And the rodent harvest probably isn't over yet either.) Mark |

Just 'cause I "harvest" them don't mean I eat them! Got another gopher by the way, maybe 5 pounds. I'm just guessing at the weight 'cause I don't want to weigh them either. To be honest I hate killing the things. But whach'a goin'a do? |

Mary, I hear they're good eatin'... Can't say I've ever done it though. I leave the exotics to the spouse! My parents did help catch a few rattlers years ago while visiting friends in Redlands, though. Nailed three of them to a board to leave out overnight for tanning the next day... and something scavenged them first. Had it not, I'd probably have tasted rattler way back then... |
